What is a Dental Implant?

A dental implant is a replication of a tooth root consisting of a material made of titanium. This titanium thread or screw like component is the foundation or support for a crown, bridge or denture. Missing teeth can be replaced with highly technical products which will look and function like natural teeth.

Are you missing a single tooth or multiple teeth?
Then dental implants may be the best way to replace them!

With each bite the dental implant stimulates the surrounding bone and preserves the integrity of the bone, After a tooth is lost, the bone is no longer stimulated and the bone & gum begins to shrink away over time.

Unlike conventional bridges, there is no reshaping or cutting of neighbouring healthy teeth when an implant is placed.

The surgical procedure** can be performed using local anesthetic, identical to what is used for fillings or tooth removal.  The pain and discomfort after the surgery is minimal.

**Any surgical procedure carries risks which is dependent on your general health.  This will be discussed with you at your consultation appointment.  Before proceeding you should seek a second opinion from an appropriately qualified health practitioner such as your dentist or your doctor.

Implant Therapy

  • 1st Step: Examination

After a discussion with your dentist a thorough dental examination will follow. All teeth are examined and the area with the missing tooth or teeth is evaluated. An x-ray assists the dentist to confirm the condition of the underlying bone which aids in determining the placement of the dental implant. In many cases advanced x-ray images are necessary to measure the volume of bone. At AIDER we provide this service on-site so you have not to be referred to a hospital or a radiology practice.

An impression or mould is taken of your upper and lower jaw this also allows the practitioner to study the models which assist to planning your case. After the assessment the dentist will explain your situation and whether implant care is possible or not. A detailed cost-estimate is provided and all related information is explained to you and given in writing.

  • 2nd Step: Inserting of the dental implant

The placement of a dental implant is similar to the type of oral surgery** seen in the surgical removal of a tooth, without the use of any forces on the jaw. Local anaesthetic is used, identical to the type used in common dental procedures such as for fillings.

**any surgical procedure carries a risk which is dependant on your general health.  This will be discussed with you at your consultation appointment.  Before proceeding you should seek a second opinion from an appropriately qualified health practitioner such as your dentist or your doctor.

  • 3rd Step: Connecting the abutment

After the bone has completely healed around the implant a connection known as an ‘abutment’ is secured to the implant. The healing time varies between 6 to 18 weeks and depends on various factors such as the quantity and quality of the bone.

  •
  • 4th Step: Creating the new tooth

When the abutment is in place, a new impression is made. Based on that model a dental ceramist will craft the new crown. The right colour and shape are important so that the new tooth looks like the surrounding natural teeth.   When the new crown is ready the dentist will simply secure the new tooth onto the dental implant. A follow-up visit is important to check functionality and aesthetics.

  • 5th Step: Maintenance

Maintenance is very important. A regular check-up and professional clean is essential to ensure a long-term success of the implant therapy.
